Maid of Honor
We have decided to keep our wedding party to a minimum. Choosing which of our closest friends could fill the
shoes of the brides maids and grooms men would have been fun .. but we think the simpler the better.
Many centuries ago, men who had decided upon a wife often had to
forcefully take her with him (or kidnap her) if her family did not approve
of him. The role of the best man evolved. His task was still more than
just safeguarding the ring. There remained a real threat that the bride's
family would attempt to obtain her return forcibly, so the best man
remained at the groom's side throughout the marriage ceremony, alert
and well-armed. He continued his duties after the ceremony by standing
guard as sentry outside the newlywed's home.
Best man is the chief male assistant to the bridegroom at a wedding.
The groom extends this honor to someone who is close to him,
generally either a brother or his closest male friend. When the groom
wishes to give this honor to a woman, she may be termed the best
woman or best person, or may still be referred to as the 'best man'.
History of the "Best Man"
Well I've given a lot of thought into choosing my "Best Man". My
choice wasn't based on my need to have that brawny support and
assistance to help me fight off the bride's clan when they come to
take her back. I don't feel my Best Man will need to be well armed, although I'm sure she wouldn't have a problem with that. I could choose one of my male friends who I would be honored to have as my Best Man. But after all my thoughts and consideration the choice was simple. I chose the person who I've had the longest friendship with in my entire life. It seems strange to say that, you would think there would be lifelong buddies that I went fishing and camping with. Or someone I would stay up all night with and play card games, or take a trip to go white water rafting. We would work together on special projects, or stay up late and shoot the bull. You know the guy that would always listen and be there when you need him, through thick and thin. Someone you could always count on. Well I realized I have that friend, Erin and that's why I will be Honored to have her stand by my side on that special day.
My Maid Of Honor: There are only a few friends amongst many whom I would choose to stand beside me on my special day. I thought making the decision of who would be best suited would leave me indecisive. However, my decision was easy. I have chosen the one friend I can truly call my “Best Friend”, I call her MOM. I have decided to enclose a copy of a poem I wrote to her a couple years ago. I wrote this poem for Mothers Day to thank her for not only being my mother but for being much more that. I hope you all enjoy it… Thanks Mom for being you!
